Guided Study Groups @ Penn State Learning is made possible through the commitment and cooperation of our student leaders. Consider becoming a GSG leader!
Our tutors are undergraduates who have successfully completed a GSG course in economics, math, statistics, or the sciences, and who are passionate about sharing their knowledge with other students.
Student leaders will:
- Attend course lectures to review and remain current with material
- Facilitate two to three weekly study sessions throughout the semester
- Ensure a meaningful out-of-class learning experience by being patient, encouraging, and supportive with every studen
Our Training Approach
You are required to take a one-credit course (C I 200) that will familiarize you with the needs of your students and allow you to provide a successful learning environment.
Peer Tutoring (C I 200) will prepare you to:
- Set up and organize a tutoring session
- Facilitate both individual and group tutoring
- Understand students’ unique learning preferences
- Communicate cross-culturally with your students
- Promote the importance of study skills
Additional course information for C I 200 is available upon request. You are not required to take the course if you have already taken SC 220.

Candidates must:
- Have completed the course they wish to conduct guided study group sessions for with a grade of a B+ or above
- Be available to attend all course-related lectures (e.g., MWF 10:10 AM), facilitate two to three study sessions per week; host exam reviews
- Enjoy working with peers on understanding and applying course concepts; possess strong communication skills pennstatelearning.psu.edu
- Have the ability and desire to work openly and constructively with supervisors; be willing to adhere to program procedures
- Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at University Park.
- Prior tutor/LA training and experience are a plus but are not required. Those without prior training or experience will need to complete the CI 200 peer tutoring course (1-credit) during their first semester as a GSG leader.
Federal Work Study recipients are encouraged to apply. Applications will be received on an ongoing basis and reviewed as openings become available.
