Based on the nationally recognized, collaborative learning model known as Supplemental Instruction (SI), Guided Study Groups @ Penn State Learning is designed to support students through free, accessible, peer-led learning environments focused on larger lecture course material.
In both small and large group sessions, Guided Study Groups @ Penn State Learning offers guidance and encouragement to all students enrolled in supported courses. From improving study skills to preparing for quizzes and exams, our sessions motivate students to question themselves and others, think critically, and work with peers to better understand and develop key concepts.
GSGs are not recommended for every course, nor are they a substitute for attending class lectures. Our resources best serve students who are prepared and ready to learn. National data on the SI model show that students who attend sessions three or more times in a semester earn higher grades than those who do not attend or attend less often. Similarly, for the fall 2021-spring 2022 academic year, Penn State institutional data shows that students attending 2 or more sessions are more likely to earn higher grades and those who do not.
