Here are several short scenarios that lay out a problem and how individuals/teams approached and solved them. As you'll read, you will learn that a combination of informational and digital literacy was needed to research, plan, and create a solution.
Digital Literacy Case Study - Retail Advertising
Problem: You own a business. You need to promote it. What is the best way to do so?
Solution: Create a short promotional video to promote the business.

Information Literacy Case Study - The Research Paper
Problem: You are a Penn State student. Your professor wants you to write a paper about a current social issue and make an argument about how that issue impacts the Penn State community. (e.g. How does sexual violence impact student life at Penn State?) You must use at least 3 sources of information that do not come from a Google search in order to make your point.
Process:
- Select information resources that help you to explore the topic, viewpoints about that topic, and identify potential keywords or ideas for further research. The Evaluating Information tutorials at the Penn State Library can be of help in this process. LionSearch is a library database that can help you to get started. You can also make an appointment with a librarian.
- Create an outline for your paper, with a thesis and several supporting points. Be sure to address and/or acknowledge other viewpoints as you write. The Writing Center can help you with this part of the process. (Note: This is available to University Park students only.)
- Write your paper, making sure to include proper citation of any ideas or facts that came from outside sources and are not your own. The PSU Library has many great tools to help you with this part of the process. The Penn State Ask a Librarian service is a great resource!
