Peer Tutoring Role Play

Video Transcript: Yeah, I guess. I don't care. I don't really want to be here. I am only here because me stupid professor made me be here.

Choice A. This student seems to be angry about something.  It could take a little time for him to feel comfortable.  You sit down, cross your arms across your chest mirroring the student’s posture and say, “So it sounds like you’re not really liking this paper thing?”

Choice B.  The student seems very unfriendly and hostile.  If he wants help he’s going about it all wrong.  His bad attitude isn’t going to get him very far – it’s probably the reason he is having trouble to begin with.  You would like to know if he has even started the paper or if he expects you to help him pick a topic and write an outline.  You say, “Let me tell you a little bit about what we do here.  We don’t teach – what we try to do is work through your information with you – kind of like helping you get started – or over whatever block is in your way.”

Choice C.  Your cell phone rings.  You are expecting a call from your friend about tickets to the concert next week, so you ask the student to hold on for a minute and you take the call.  It turns out the call wasn’t the one you were expecting.  You hang up, make eye contact with the student, and ask, “OK, so what’s the problem you’re having with this paper?”
