Choice A. Your cell phone rings. You are expecting a call from your friend about tickets to the concert next week, so you ask the student to hold on for a minute and you take the call. It turns out the call wasn’t the one you were expecting, so you put the cell phone on the table where you can reach it easily if it rings again. “OK, so what’s the problem you’re having with this paper?”
Choice B. This student seems very quiet and withdrawn, maybe even a little confused and angry. You quietly say, “Let me tell you a little bit about what we do here. We don’t teach – what we try to do is work through your information with you – kind of like helping you get started – or over whatever block is in your way.
