Writing Intensive Course Resources

Writing intensive courses, or “W” courses, rely on a professor’s ability to help students learn course content through writing. You will find materials here that explain what a “W” course entails; that suggest ideas for giving informal, often ungraded writing assignments that help students think about new concepts early in their writing process; that offer strategies for designing formal, usually graded assignments that help students learn the writing techniques specific to their field of study; and that outline ways you can give students helpful feedback on their writing as well as ways students can helpfully review one another’s drafts. Further information about Penn State’s Writing Across the Curriculum graduation requirement can be found by going to the University Faculty Senate Guide to Curricular Procedures and selecting “Writing Across the Curriculum.”
